Y - гласная или согласная?

MYSTERIOUS LETTER Y

May I ask you a question? How would you read these words:
myth, play, you, baby, myrrh, symbol, fly, crypt, to type, to copy and all other words with the letter y?

Seems quite confusing, doesn't it?
Moreover, it's a real problem to spell plural forms of the words like a day, a baby, a fly, a lady if one is unable to distinguish the function of the letter y at a word.

So it's the time to make it clear.

Letter Y is considered to be semivowel that means that sometimes it sounds like a consonant while frequently it produces a vowel sound.
For example, in the word myth it sounds like a short [I] so it is a vowel.
On the other hand, in the word boy it sounds [j] behaving like a consonant.

At the begining of the words like you, yes, yellow it sounds [j] and there are no problems, while at the end of the words like a key, the sky, a toy, a cry, to fly, to study, to cary, etc. it is difficult to make plural form of a noun and 3d singular of a verb.
